Orthoplasty: Correction and Protection of Toe Deformities
Orthoplasty, or toe orthosis, is a removable, custom-made mold made of silicone elastomer
directly on the patient’s foot. Its purpose is to correct or protect deformities of the toes,
thereby avoiding any irritation or abnormal pressure from shoes or between the toes.
An orthoplasty is intended to:
- Correct a reducible deformity of one or more toes (claw toes, overlapping toes). This is referred to as corrective orthoplasty.
- Protect an irreducible deformity of the foot or toes from shoe pressure (hallux valgus, fifth toe varus). This is referred to as protective orthoplasty.
